How to Moisturise Parched Skin in the Summer

23 Jun 2021

We're going to let you in on a little skincare secret: your complexion can get dried out in any season, even in more humid summer months.

"Any extreme weather conditions or weather changes can contribute to dehydrated or dry skin," says Jacob Tomás del Rosario, Senior Manager of Field Sales + Education at Youth To The People. "In the summer, we tend to expose our skin to more environmental damage than any time of the year, including but not limited to sun exposure, which can on its own lead to depleted skin."

There are a few other seasonal factors that contribute to parched summer skin, including constant exposure to air conditioning whether at your home, in your car, or at the office. Plus, chlorine, as well as other potentially stripping chemicals in swimming pools can do a number on skin hydration levels. And then there's simply not sticking to a regimen: "I know I'm guilty of just not being as intentionally consistent with my skincare routine on lazy summer days," del Rosario admits.

Adjusting your skincare routine for the summer can help. Start by considering what temperature and climate you're exposing your skin to, del Rosario suggests.

"You may want to switch to a lighter weight moisturiser during the day if you haven't been using one already, and add a few drops of your favourite oil to it to boost that replenishing moisture at night," he says. "It should go without saying but be especially vigilant about reapplying your sunscreen during the summer. Ideally this would be a year-round behavior."

The best way to moisturise parched skin in the summer is by being consistent with a skincare regimen. It's easy to remember to slather on a rich moisturiser in the winter, but not so much during the easy, breezy months.

"It can sound counterintuitive, but I would recommend not forgetting to apply some form of oil, or emollients, within your skincare routine," del Rosario says. "What often happens in the summer with balanced to combination and oily skin is that we immediately go to oil-free products." But, to prevent dehydration, emollients or occlusives are crucial to locking in moisture and helping it absorb into the skin.

That's where the Youth To The People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask comes in.

"With the Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask, it's all about the blend of four vital hydrators in the formula," del Rosario says. "You have star ingredients like hyaluronic acid and squalane, which help with massive replenishment of water and oil to retain that water. Then you have glycerin, yet another tried and true water attractor, and to top it all off, betaine is added for its capabilities as a delivery system; it acts as a water carrier. I really am serious when I say every person should own the Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask because it's an excellent skincare option."

When you wake up in the morning, del Rosario recommends applying the Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream.

"It feels whipped and airy but is formulated with a super lightweight sunflower oil that helps to lock in hydration for all day comfort and zero greasiness," he says. Other products he suggests for treating dry skin in the summer include the Superfood Cleanser for a replenishing and non-stripping first step, and the Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Oil to boost moisture in any product or apply to targeted dry or chapped areas as needed.

The Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask can be used every night. It can also be used as a targeted treatment by applying it just to extra dry spots. Talk about beauty sleep - the innovative blend of hydrators works to lock in and replenish moisture overnight, so you'll wake up with visibly happier skin. The Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask can be applied just like a moisturiser.

"Unlike some overnight masks with thicker formulations, this absorbs quickly without that feeling where you don't want to turn over and rest your face on your freshly washed pillowcase," del Rosario says. "Start with a pea size and add more if you feel it's necessary. Massage it into the skin as your final step, after your products and serums, and if you're anything like me, just fall asleep listening to your favourite podcast."
